Shou Sugi Ban is a charred wood cladding renowned for its durability and unique aesthetic. Originating in Japan, charring was accomplished by tying three boards into a triangular “chimney” and holding the wood over a small fire. The flames would race up the inside of the boards, leaving a distinctive charred black appearance.
We have taken the original concept and built a specialized burning oven to replicate the chimney charring effect, without the need to directly handle burning boards. We utilize cedar, thermally modified Oak and Poplar, and other Midwestern Hardwoods sourced from local sawmills. Our Shou Sugi Ban is available in many colors and finishes for both interior and exterior. We have a few standard colors and textures, but virtually any color and style can be made for your project.
